Unreasonable Logic

The Science of Blogging

In physics, a particle exists in multiple states at once until it is observed. Quantum Superposition is the idea that tiny, subatomic particles can exist in multiple states or places at the exact same time. The Observer Effect is the rule that simply measuring or looking at these particles forces them to "choose" just one of those states, instantly changing how they behave. Which is exactly like a blogger with the perfect blog post.

In the beginning, you search for ideas. Any idea that feels compelling enough to make you want to tap the plastic squares for a while, making words fill the glowing rectangle of your computational device.

When you happen on said idea, it begins life just like those subatomic particles, it is in a multiple state of being a great idea and utter rubbish. It is therefore quite understandable that you may choose not to go any further than simply let the idea swim around in the cosmic soup of your brain. That way, you never have to let the coin drop, so to speak, and realise the idea is crap.

But let’s say you push on. The idea landed on the side of the coin you called. And it’s a good one. Yes, you say, I’m going to write it. And commence bashing those plastic squares with the earnest efforts of a pulsar, the cosmic metronomes faithfully sweeping beams of radiation across the universe with unmatched precision and endurance. An endurance which, it turns out, is entirely conditional on whether or not you suddenly fancy a brew.

There, you’ve written it. You relax and have that brew. Basking in the glory of the finished piece. And once again, Quantum Superposition arrives. But this time in the form of assessing the quality of the piece you’ve written. Here’s how it works. While you leave the post unpublished, it is a stunningly brilliant, inspired piece of writing. No doubt about it, your best yet. Whilst at the same time, being utter rubbish. BUT, you can bask in its glory. Because you haven’t published it.

But next, you have your very own Schrƶdinger’s Cat moment. Once you hit that infamous ā€œPublishā€ button, you can no longer salivate over having a world class blog post (a live cat in the box), or, an unmitigated piece of crap nobody reads (A very dead cat in the box).

The Observer Effect engages, your post goes live, and…

Zero reads. Zero comments.

Or…

Hundreds of likes, comments etc.

This is undoubtedly the science of blogging. And now I’ve written this post, it is the best, most informative blog post ever written. Or total garbage. Only time will tell.
